"Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt." – Shakespeare - Measure for Measure
Have you ever decided to do something new and exciting, only to feel strongly held back and unsure? Like booking a holiday and then, the night before you go, asking yourself, "What on earth was I thinking?”
The first step is often the most daunting, but it's also a moment filled with potential and discovery.
What is it about this push and pull of our motivations that feels so scary, vital and exciting?

How to get out of your comfort zone with small steps and practise:
Neuroplasticity
The brain is remarkably adaptable and capable of change, thanks to its neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to reorganise itself by forming new neural connections.
With practise and perseverance, we can train our brains to become more comfortable with taking first steps and embrace new challenges.
By repeatedly stepping out of our comfort zones, we can rewire our brains to associate these experiences with positive outcomes rather than fear.
The Dopamine Factor
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter often referred to as the "feel-good" chemical. It plays a crucial role in motivation and reward. When we achieve a goal or experience something pleasurable, our brains release dopamine, reinforcing the behaviour that led to that outcome.
Taking the first step and trying something new, though sometimes challenging, can trigger a small release of dopamine, especially when we perceive it as an achievement. This initial boost of dopamine can motivate us to continue moving forward.
Each small achievement along the way provides a dopamine boost, reinforcing the behaviour and making it easier to take subsequent steps.
The Art of Taking the First Step
Every creative adventure starts with a willingness to embrace imperfection.
The creative process is an experience of ongoing beginnings, constant risks and dopamine boosts as we turn ideas into actions and achievements. There may well be gradual refinement in your work, but those first steps, that initial expression of your idea, carry a strong authenticity and spontaneity that can often be lost in the pursuit of refinement.
I host workshops, online body doubling sessions and coach people who are looking for support, accountability and encouragement with their creativity.
I provide a supportive environment where you can explore and experiment making those first steps authentic and fulfilling, whatever they may be, and what ever stage you are at.
"The secret of getting ahead is getting started." – Mark Twain
How Is Being Curious Better Than Being Critical?

Curiosity is a powerful driving force behind getting out of your comfort zone. When we're curious, we're more likely to explore new ideas, ask questions, and seek out new experiences. It’s the little extra nudge that gets us out of one state and into another.
Curiosity activates the brain's reward system, releasing dopamine and creating a sense of pleasure and motivation. Cultivating curiosity is a skill we can develop and keep alive in our everyday lives.
It's a key aspect of my approach. I encourage you to follow your interests and explore new creative outlets without the pressure of achieving or seeking ‘so-called’ perfection. By fostering a sense of curiosity, we help you stay engaged and motivated throughout your creative journey.
Can I be creatively free?
I've designed nurturing spaces for your creativity and personal growth. Whether you're an artist, writer, musician, designer, or have any creative project you want to get cracking on, if you are looking to explore new avenues of self-expression, I provide the resources and support to guide you along the way.
When you find encouragement and inspiration amazing things start to happen
I'm building a friendly network of people who are also on their creative journeys. I host online foucs sessions (an hour to meet on line and get stuff done) that also act as accountabilty check ins. Sharing your ideas with others who understand the process can be incredibly empowering. It reminds us that we're not alone in our struggles and that every creative journey is filled with adventures and challenges, and that we can do this together. By celebrating each other's progress, our community helps you stay motivated and resilient.
Take a Journey of Self-Discovery
“It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop” – Confucius

Taking the first step is not just about achieving a specific goal; it's also a journey of self-discovery. As you explore new creative avenues, you'll learn more about your strengths, passions, and unique perspectives. This process of self-discovery is deeply rewarding and leads to a greater sense of fulfilment and purpose.
Taking the first step is a courageous act that requires both vulnerability and resilience
By understanding the neuroscience behind the fear of the unknown, we can embrace the thrill of it rather than be intimidated by it. Celebrate your courage in making that first move towards something new and unknown, overcome your hesitation, and embark on an exciting journey of growth and discovery.
With a focus on curiosity rather than critique and the tools and resources to try something new with confidence, amazing change is possible.
